Geekiest Show Ever 247 – Stone in The Snow

Nobody move, nobody breathe, we are all here together.

We start with a discussion of why we were down a host last week. Kevin describes what happened to him and all the fun he had while in the hospital. Riveting conversation right? Then we discuss Elisa and Kevin’s snow exchange earlier in the day. Next up is Kevin’s surprise purchase, well not really he has talked about it for a few months. The conversation moves on to Mobile Device Management or MDM. Melissa shares her story of how volunteering to resurrect some older iPads led to an even bigger job. She discusses how she used a free service called Meraki to make this job easier.

Then we round out the show with our picks. We start out with Mike’s idea for a hoverboard that will let him do his job easier. Next up Elisa wants to work healthier when she is at her computer so she chooses a customizable standing desk. Melissa choose a massage chair that has three speeds low, medium and who needs a wife. Last thing is Kevin wants to sit in a portable spa on his deck while it snows. The mental image almost kills Mike.

Geekiest Show Ever 246 – Whispering Geek Awards

It happened again we are down a host. This week Kevin was sick an unable to make the show.

We start with idea about new geeky awards, “The GOO Awards”. Mike, Elisa and Melissa discuss how these will work and look for input from the listeners on what they would like to see. Then Elisa tells how AT&T messed with the wrong woman this time with their odd billing practices and methods of accounting. This leads into a great discussion about the who, what and why of different cell phone plans and providers. Then Melissa poses a couple of interesting geek questions. First do we still really need a computer in today’s world? Followed by, Can we manage our data with just mobile tools? As part of this discussion, she gives a special shout out to Imazing and the tools they create.

Then we round out the show with our picks. Melissa chooses a chair to make her comfy, from Steel Case. Elisa then wants to upgrade her car entertainment system with a new Kenwood head unit and get all the modern conveniences. Then Mike takes remodel and home theater to the next step this week a Bose Home theater for his make believe remodel.

Geekiest Show Ever 245 – Dead Goo

Nobody breathe all 4 of us are here this week.

This week we are doing something a bit different. Since most people, except Kevin, hunker down in the winter and look for indoor activities we decided to look at a favorite geek pastime of binge watching. We discuss what we have been binge watching. Some movies Dark Night, Batman versus Superman and Deadpool. TV shows that are on our list include Orange is the New Black, Stranger Things, Narcos, Bloodline, OA and Black Mirror.

We close out with our picks. Melissa goes back to her favorite place and chooses a Black 256 GB iPhone 7 plus. Elisa goes over the top with a geeks favorite beverage machine. An Espresso & Cappuccino machine. Mike carries on his theme from last week and chooses a 60” 4K TV with UHD. Kevin finishes out with a Linux Laptop he is lusting for.

Geekiest Show Ever 244 – Need U to Play

We went from full force to just 50% this week with just Mike and Kevin.

A big thank you right off the top to Guy from The MyMac podcast for the help he gave Kevin in getting up and running with Audio Hijack. It was a fun and geeky playdate.

This week since Mike and Kevin are left on their own they go back to an old favorite, gaming. Kevin talks about something new he has discovered and wants. It is the GB Boy Colour, this is a reproduction of the original Gameboy Color. Then we discuss the Xbox 360 Kevin got and the new Nintendo Switch that Mike is tempted to buy.

We close out with our picks. Kevin is looking for the ultimate in a sleep experience and wants to make it hi-tech, so he choses a Sleep Number bed. For his pick, Mike wants to build a new family room or man cave in his basement. He thinks for the $5,000 limit he can get it done.

Geekiest Show Ever 243 – Open Source Love Goo

Hail, Hail, the gangs all here. Although not 100% we soldier through to bring you some infotainment.

We start out with a long version of the weather report and discuss our likes and dislikes about it. I know a real shocker there. After that we discuss Elisa’s recent experience with Apple service or the lack there of. Then we move on to a discussion about the Apple Watch and its accuracy. Do we need to calibrate our watches? If so here is link to Apple KDB about it. Next up a murder case in Arkansas that leads to a discussion about the intelligence of our digital assistants. Also, how technology is used by different generations.

We close out with our picks for the week. Mike leads off with a drone to spy on his neighbors and us with, DJI Phantom 3. Kevin wants a RC truck to chase the squirrels around his yard. Elisa’s pick the travel package to go Macstock 2017. Melissa did some quick shopping and selected an 9.7” iPad Pro, but Kevin won’t let her have Apple care.

Geekiest Show Ever 242 – Just a Picture of Her Tech Folks

Yes we are back but, we are down a host. Elisa is under the weather in more ways than one and we cover that in the weather report.

We start with a discussion of some things we received at Christmas. Kevin loves his Amazon Tap. That evolves into our different music streaming services. Then back to the things we got or gave our family and friends for Christmas.

Then Melissa finally got her new MacBook Pro and shares with us her delivery woes getting it. After that we try to help her solve the issues she is facing with an upcoming trip. Mike and Kevin give her some ideas to help. Then we discuss battery life of our gadgets because Melissa is a bit ADD about charging.

We wrap it up with our picks. Melissa decides her new MacBook is her pick and if she had the extra cash she would buy Kevin one. Mike decides on a last minute pick is the Microsoft Surface Pro 4. Kevin mentions Mark’s new iPad Pro before sharing his pick of a quiet 2 week retreat into the Mountains of Tennessee. We round out with Melissa’s PSA.

Two weeks in a row and the gangs all here.

First we start off discussing Elisa’s Apple Watch woes and the support call she is still waiting to be returned. Then Melissa follows up on her research into what it takes to now qualify for using the educational discount from Apple.

Next up is the main topic of the show, geeky stocking stuffers under $30 that actually fit in a stocking. Kevin starts out with Mattel Electronic Football handheld game, followed by Anker portable charger for your devices, then rounds it up with not one but, two flash drives. Elisa’s potpourri of picks starts with a product for Mike and Kevin Poo-Pourri, then moves on to a Stanley screwdriver, a different Anker charger and rounds it out with a childhood toy favorite the Slinky. Mike chimes in with his picks TrackR bravo key tracker, iFixit toolkit and its benefits beyond technology, and a LED Flashlight. Melissa brings the idea of the watchbands from Amazon that are fraction of the cost Apple ones are, then a mug made from Lego and wraps up with her previous mention of the Fidget Cube.

This week it is Elisa, Melissa, Mike and Kevin. Yes believe it or not the gangs all here. We lead off with update to show recording schedule over the coming weeks.

Kevin starts out talking about his Comcast interaction this week and why he is going to purchase his own cable modem and possibly DVR over the coming months. Elisa and Melissa give some sage advice on what to consider when modem shopping and Mike offers recommendations for DVR alternatives.

We then move on to Melissa’s recent buying binge and all the goodies she has ordered. To make it easier for us to understand, she shares an informative PDF she put together. If you want to see it ask her and she will share it.

We close out the show with our picks as always. Elisa follows on with her pick last week by choosing a Sonos Playbar. Which we then discuss the type of audio it simulates. We move to Melissa’s pick of the Wish App and how it let’s her compare prices and avoid middlemen. Mike has interesting little Drone to fly around and annoy his neighbors and pets. Geekiest Show Ever 239 – Tap In

This week it is Elisa with Mike and Kevin.

We start silly as usual but, get serious when Kevin asks for support for the victims of the wild fires in Gatlinburg Tennessee, a place near and dear to him so follow this link to see how you can help the victims out. Then we wrap up with a wonderful weather report, at least from Kevin’s perspective.

Then Kevin gives an update on his iOS 10 issues and concerns and wonders why Siri has gotten stupid. That leads to discussion of voice recognition devices including the Amazon Echo, Google Home and rounds out with the Amazon Tap.

Elisa then talks about all of her Black Friday purchases that arrived and we discuss Apples Photos app and the problems she has had with it. We then discuss alternative print services including one surprise for Kevin Amazon print services and a link to deal.

We wrap-up with our picks. First off is Kevin with something to fulfill his need a new USB powered hub from Satechi. Elisa has fairly unique pick for the sports fan. It is Fanchest if you have a sports fan on your Christmas list check it out at FanChest.com. Mike then decides to break the bank and shock Elisa  with his pick of a Bobcat Utility vehicle.

Geekiest Show Ever 238 – Mike’s Dark Nightmare

This week it is Elisa with Mike and Kevin while Melissa is still trying to get back to us.

We start with discussing all the items Elisa and Mike bought in and around Black Friday sales that abounded this past weekend. Kevin had great deal of restraint but, did cave on one item.

Next up is our discussion around the rumored death of The Apple Airport Extreme and which way one might got if it happens. Discussing mesh networks and other alternatives. It is recommended that listeners go have a listen MGG 633 Deep Dive How to Choose a Router in 2016. 

We wrap-up with our picks. Starting with Mike’s super cool woodworking all in one tool The Shop Smith. Kevin is still drooling over Logic Pro X to do his show editing. Elisa has no real pick since she hadn’t planned on making this week’s show but, she does want to learn more about audio recording and editing.
